2nd Annual New Crops Roundtable
7:15 AM-8:45 AM
Presented by: Biodimensions & Gillon & Associates PLLC
BIO and BioDimensions, Inc. are hosting this second annual roundtable discussion among companies and entrepreneurs who are actively developing new agricultural crops to support the bioeconomy. This will be a very fast paced, guided discussion which will build on the successes of the first roundtable held in Chicago by addressing the unique challenges involved in commercializing a variety of new crops. Challenges include regulatory hurdles, breeding and crop development, business relationships with farmers, farm policy barriers, infrastructure needs, and market development.
Companies who will be participating include: BioDimensions, Ceres, Edenspace, Infinite Enzymes, Mendel, Metabolix, Performance Plants, and Stemergy.
Some of the specific topics that will be discussed:
- Specific hurdles involved in commercializing new crops such as obtaining crop insurance, crop loans, and registering herbicides and pesticides.
- Opportunities to collaborate on public policy, lobbying and strategic planning.
- Discussions on sustainability and biodiversity.
- Legal issues involved in intellectual property and market access specific to new crop development.
- Ways to collaborate with the chemical industry to develop markets for specialty crop components such as unique fatty acid profiles.
- Ways to more efficiently interface with research farms, innovative farmers, and regional networks of collaborating companies.
Peter Nelson has worked since 1996 on alternative crops from farm production through product development. He cofounded BioDimensions to facilitate connections between farmers, new crops, processing and new markets. Among other activities he is an advisor to Infinite Enzymes of Jonesboro, Arkansas which produces industrial enzymes in maize, and Stemergy of Ontario, Canada which produces biofibers from industrial hemp, flax and kenaf.
William Gillon has been active in agricultural law for 25 years. His work experience includes the USDA Office of General Counsel, Senior Counsel to the Senate Agriculture Committee, General Counsel of the National Cotton Council of America and private practice for the last 7 years. He established his own firm in 2005 and is working with BioDimensions on overcoming agricultural institutional challenges to alternative crops, by addressing hurdles such as business structure, crop insurance, product registrations, and crop loans.
