Renewable Specialty Chemicals

Biorefining isn’t just for bio-ethanol. Biorefining can produce polyester, nylon, and amino acids just to name a few. In fact, one feedstock may produce many different products.

Biotechnology is everywhere you look - even in places you might not expect.

Biobased products can supplement or replace a wide variety of petroleum-based products, and the United States has a substantial potential competitive advantage in their manufacture.

Enzymes are the oldest tool in industrial biotechnology. For thousands of years, processes such as brewing, bread-making and the production of cheese have involved the usage of enzymes. Today the global market for industrial enzymes is estimated at around $2.9 billion.

Biotechnology is all around us especially in our homes. From new household cleaners and detergents made with biotech enzymes, to our contact solution and the paper we write on, advances in biotechnology are helping to make our lives easier, cleaner, and greener.

With these benefits increasing demand for industrial biotechnology products and processes, this study uses patent data, survey results, and technology and firm level data from emerging sectors of industrial biotechnology to paint a detailed picture of innovation in the field.

We have used the biological processes of microorganisms for 6,000 years to make useful food products, such as bread and cheese, and to preserve dairy products.

It shows the application of industrial biotechnology can improve the efficiency of the biofuel and renewable chemical industries and gives an understanding of the impact of industrial biotechnology on the U.S. economy up to 2008.

Today, the biotechnology industry is enjoying more success and influence than ever before. Our industry’s innovations continue to improve the lives of people worldwide, and the advancement of these innovations is supported by the work of BIO.

In a presentation at the Taiwan Chemical Industry Forum, Matthew Carr outlines how industrial biotechnology is the third wave in biotech.

Biotechnology, the combination of biology and technology, includes biologic applications, diagnostic tools and businesses that improve everyday life by providing solutions to some of life's most vexing problems.

Has a member of your family been vaccinated against hepatitis B? Do you know someone who has diabetes? Has anyone in your family had heart disease?

Industrial biotechnology is creating new markets for traditional agricultural crops and crop residues as renewable feedstocks, chemical intermediates, and energy sources.
