Synthetic Biology

Harnessing microbes to change the world, one process at a time.

A new paper in Science from BIO concludes that at this early stage of development, synthetic biology does not pose significant novel threats that are fundamentally different from those faced by the biotechnology industry. The regulatory framework that has been shaping recombinant DNA technology for the past 40 years is generally applicable and relevant.

Vigorous government support has played a key role in encouraging China’s development of a bio-based economy, especially in regard to biofuels.

Currently, synthetic rubber is derived entirely from petrochemical sources. Genencor®, a Division of Danisco U.S. Inc., together with The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, is currently working on the development of a fermentation-based process for the BioIsoprene™ monomer.

Synthetic biology is a new interdisciplinary area that involves the application of engineering principles to biology.

All programs at the BIO World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioprocessing are open to attendance by members of the media. Complimentary media registration is available to editors and reporters with valid press credentials working full time for print, broadcast or web publications.

The successful construction of a synthesized genome could enable new research and development of human therapies, biofuels, and biobased chemicals from renewable resources.

BIO review of this emerging science illustrates progress in applying synthetic biology to improve manufacturing processes.

The revolution in synthetic biology has enabled innovative manufacture of biofuels and the development of biological processes for the manufacture of bulk and fine chemicals.

From August 16 to August 22, 2010, Hart Research Associates conducted a nationwide survey among 1,000 adults about attitudes toward the entities involved in the oversight of new scientific and technological advances, awareness of nanotechnology, and awareness of and attitudes toward synthetic biology and two potential applications of the science.

Biotechnology is all around us and is already a big part of our lives, providing breakthrough products and technologies to combat disease, reduce our environmental footprint, feed the hungry, and make useful products.

Biobased products cover a wide range of materials. One new such product is biobased insulation made from mushrooms named Greensulate.
