In a new issue paper from the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology, a group of nine science and policy experts evaluate the process by which U.S. regulatory agencies determine the safety of biotechnology-derived crops. - National Academy of Sciences Deem "Biotech Crops Safe
Twice in the past decade scientists from the prestigious National Academy of Sciences have examined the safety and regulation of plants improved by biotechnology. Their most recent report (4/3/00) reiterates the initial findings that these crops present no harm to human health or to the environment.
- American Medical Association Reconfirms Safety of Foods Derived from Biotechnology
At its annual conference in December 2000, the AMA issued a report on its reexamination of issues surrounding foods enhanced through biotechnology. This report considers their findings and conclusions in explaining the processes for introducing transgenes into plants and the regulation of transgenic crops and GM foods in the United States, and in discussing potential risks and benefits of these with respect to human health and the environment. Key issues related to consumer choice, food labeling, and global food production are also examined, forming the basis for the report's conclusions and recommendations.
