The Pacific Rim Summit on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy
September 10-12, 2008 - Vancouver, British Columbia
The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), a leader in industrial biotechnology is pleased to announce the third annual Pacific Rim Summit on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy. This meeting will continue and expand the essential exchange between industry, academia and government that has been so successful at the World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioprocessing. Nations on all sides of the Pacific are increasingly looking for sustainable sources of energy and cleaner, more efficient methods of industrial production, including new ways to make pharmaceuticals and other chemicals. Biotech applications that can enable industrial processes to utilize agricultural instead of petrochemical feedstocks are growing in importance in the Pacific Rim countries. Biobased economies in various states of complexity and development are emerging throughout the region.
While there have been a number of conferences in Asia dealing with biofuels, BIO's Industrial and Environmental Section believes that there have been none that fully integrate the broad spectrum of industrial biotechnology. To that end the Pacific Rim Summit on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy will bring together scientists, government officials, industry executives and investors from North America and throughout the Pacific Rim region to highlight recent advances in genomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics in the energy and manufacturing space. The conference organizers hope to foster international business relationships that will spur development of biobased economies in countries that have large agricultural feedstock resources.
The summit will provide a unique forum for interaction between businessmen, government representatives and academics. This three-day event will feature presentations on bio-energy, bio-based products, industrial biotechnology for drug discovery and production, novel applications of marine biotechnology, and nanotechnology. These presentations will examine the role of bioenergy and industrial biotechnology in securing energy supplies and building regional prosperity in the future. They will also explore the convergence of biotechnology, chemistry, agriculture and the study of marine microorganisms and how it can revolutionize nearly every aspect of the global economy.
The program will feature business partnering sessions, an opening plenary session, plenary luncheons, several concurrent sessions, and evening receptions. The event promises to be a lively and dynamic conference in a centrally located and truly attractive venue.
