the secretariat might provide. Article 19 - Botswana is taking steps to sign the Cartagena
Protocol on Biosafety. It is the Government’s intention to formulate policies
and necessary legislation on access to genetic resources in line with the Cartagena Protocol and CBD. (Updated 2000?)
Article 15 - The government is currently considering Bill of Law No. 306/95 that will control access to
genetic resources. Article 16 - The Law of Industrial Property, Law No. 9,279/96, governs intellectual property law of
genetic resources. Article 19 - No current legislation (Updated 1998)
Article 15 -Legislation exists; access to modern biotechnologies and the use of the related products
and information will be provided in the draft of the Genetically Modified
Organisms Act.Currently, access to genetic resources and technologies is regulated by the New Cultivars and New
Animal Races Protection Act of 1996, applied to newly obtained, invented or
improved crop cultivars or to new races, lines or hybrids of farm animals. Article 16 -The relative priority of access to and transfer of technology in Bulgaria is medium. Article 19 - The Bulgarian Government is preparing a comprehensive Act on GMOs that aims to offer the basis for
implementation of EC Directive 90/219/EEC, EC Directive 90/220/EEC, as well as
the specific requirements of the CBD expressed by the Cartagena Protocol on
Biosafety.The Cartagena Protocol was recently ratified by the Bulgarian (Updated May 2001)
