Beijing, China (November 12, 2013) – Executives from biotech and pharmaceutical companies, along with investment firms from North America, Europe and Asia, will convene today for the 3rd annual BIO Convention in China, where they will meet and explore business opportunities with China’s emerging biotech sector. Hosted by the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), the program will begin Tuesday, Nov. 12th and continue through Wednesday, Nov. 13th at the China National Convention Center in Beijing, China.

"China's biotech sector is growing at a steady pace, with double digit growth in sales revenues and profits," said BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood. "BIO continues to play an important role in facilitating the emergence of the biotech industry in China and we are committed to supporting our members’ efforts in this important market."

Three keynote speakers will provide insights on the business opportunities surrounding the biotech sector in China, including Gary F. Locke, Ambassador of the United States of America to the People’s Republic of China; Bian Zhenjia, Assistant Minister, China Food and Drug Administration; and Zhao Yajun, Director General, China Center for Pharmaceutical Exchange.

Attendees will also be invited to one-on-one dialogues with biopharma industry executives who will discuss recent company successes, what keeps company executives up at night, and where the industry’s leading companies are headed in 2014.  Industry executives currently scheduled to participate in the candid question-and-answer style sessions include Merck KGaA global leads Susan Herbert, PhD, Head of Global Business Development & Strategy; and Annalisa Jenkins, MBBS, MRCP, Executive Vice President and Head of Global Research and Development. Additional one-on-one dialogues will be held with Yan Xijun, Chairman of the Board of Tianjin Tasly Group, Wang Xiaodong, PhD, Director and Investigator, National Institute of Biological Sciences, and Wang Yinxiang, PhD, CEO & CSO, Zhejiang Beta Pharma.

The BIO Convention in China is designed to help both US and Chinese companies capitalize on the many opportunities in China’s rapidly growing market. According to GlobalData, China’s prescription drug market is projected to grow at a 26% compound annual rate, reaching $315 billion in 2020. Last year, it was $48 billion.

Panel sessions will highlight the latest issues and trends related to doing business in China. Program topics include science-focused sessions such as vaccine development, China’s unmet medical needs and the research and development of orphan drugs to treat rare diseases in China, as well as business-focused sessions exploring China’s private health care industry, early-stage VC funding in China, and partnering models between Chinese and Western companies.

Event attendees will have the opportunity to connect with industry leaders through BIO’s One-on-One PartneringSystem. Featured at all of the BIO business development, partnering and investor meetings in North America, Europe and Asia, the system schedules 30-minute meetings in private rooms at the conference.  This industry-specific, web-based interactive software enables participants to move efficiently from the identification of prospective partners and investors to discussion and negotiations.  To learn more about the system, including its evolution, read here.
