Acting FDA Commissioner Lester Crawford to Deliver Keynote at BIO-Windhover Partnering Conference

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 13, 2005) -- Lester Crawford, DVM, Ph.D., President George W. Bush’s nominee to serve as commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), will deliver the keynote address Wednesday, April 27 at BIO-Windhover 2005.  Now in its fourth year, BIO-Windhover is a premier U.S.-based partnering conference for senior pharmaceutical and biotechnology executives and business development professionals. The conference runs April 25-27, 2005 at the Ritz-Carlton in Washington, D.C.

Drawing on his current role as the agency’s acting commissioner, Dr. Crawford will discuss FDA's recent progress and future priorities, particularly as they relate to the bioscience industry.

“We’re thrilled that Dr. Crawford will be joining us at BIO-Windhover,” said Jim Greenwood, president of BIO. “His audience will be senior-level biotechnology and pharmaceutical executives and business development professionals who are unquestionably interested in evolving regulatory policies. Dr. Crawford has a wealth of knowledge gained from a remarkable career, and we look forward to his insightful comments.”

Dr. Crawford has played major roles in mandatory nutrition labeling, the formation of the World Trade Organization and the control of chemical and microbiological contaminants of food. He has been an advisor to the World Health Organization of the United Nations for much of his career.

Dr. Crawford previously served as deputy commissioner of FDA. He also was chair of the Department of Physiology-Pharmacology at the University of Georgia and administrator of the Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA). From 1997-2002, he was director of the Center for Food and Nutrition Policy at Georgetown University and at Virginia Tech, where it moved in 2001.

Dr. Crawford received a DVM from Auburn University, a Ph.D. in pharmacology from the University of Georgia and an Honorary Doctorate from Budapest University.
