BIO Congratulates, Pledges to Work With New House Committee Leaders

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Thursday, December 09, 2010) - The biotechnology industry pledges to work with the new Congress and leaders of key House committees to establish a policy environment that fosters innovation. The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) today congratulated the newly elected chairmen and chairwoman of House committees for the 112th Congress. BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood released the following statement:

“The biotechnology industry is comprised of scientists, entrepreneurs, and large and small biotechnology companies in all 50 states engaged in transforming scientific discoveries into innovative new medical therapies, increased agricultural production, and cleaner manufacturing of biobased products and biofuels. Nationwide, the industry directly employs more than 1.4 million people and indirectly generates jobs for an additional 6.6 million people. BIO and its member companies pledge to work with the 112th Congress to create a policy environment that enables this vital industry to continue to produce innovative solutions to health care, agriculture and environmental challenges while generating jobs and economic growth.

“The industry welcomes and congratulates the newly elected leaders of Congressional committees. In particular, we look forward to working with Reps. Frank D. Lucas (R-Okla.) on Agriculture, Harold Rogers (R-Ala.) on Appropriations, Fred Upton (R-Mich.) on Energy and Commerce, Sam Graves (R-Mo.) on Small Business, and Dave Camp (R-Mich.) on Ways and Means to move forward with policies that support the ongoing, important work of biotechnology companies across the United States.”
