BIO President Jim Greenwood and BIO Chairman Richard Pops to Deliver Keynotes at BIO 2005

WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 14, 2005) – Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) president Jim Greenwood and Board chairman Richard Pops will deliver keynote addresses at the BIO 2005 Annual International Convention June 19-22, 2005, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia.

Greenwood’s keynote, scheduled Monday, will be his first address at a BIO annual meeting.

Following Greenwood’s remarks, Morton Kondracke, a Fox News contributor, author and television co-host, will lead a luncheon panel discussion, entitled “Saving the World: The Future of Global Drug Development,” on the challenges of bringing new vaccines or other innovative drugs to the developing world. Panelists include Peter B. Corr, senior vice president, science and technology, Pfizer Inc.; Alan J. Lewis, president, Celgene; John Patterson, global head of drug development, AstraZeneca; and Robert R. Ruffolo Jr., president, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Luncheons run 12:15 to 2 p.m.)

Pops, CEO of Alkermes Inc., will deliver the keynote at Tuesday’s luncheon. Pops is completing his two-year term as BIO’s Board chairman.

 The Tuesday plenary luncheon, “The True Beneficiaries,” focuses on patients who have been helped by biotechnology. John H. Johnson, company group chairman, biopharmaceuticals worldwide, Johnson & Johnson, is a featured speaker. Special guests are Janie Feliz, a patient, and Ronan Tynan, a physician and entertainer.

National Journalists to Moderate Sessions

·               “25 Years of Healing – Turning Science into Solutions,” Monday, June 20, 2005 (breakfast).

In recognition of the 25th anniversary of the Bayh-Dole Act, former senator Birch Bayh, a co-author, will be among the panelists discussing the law’s impact. Bayh-Dole permits transfer of government-sponsored research to universities and small businesses. Kondracke will moderate panelists, including Donald Drakeman, president, CEO, director of Medarex Inc.; Amy Gutmann, president of the University of Pennsylvania; James C. Mullen, CEO, Biogen Idec Inc.; and Roger M. Perlmutter, executive vice president, R&D, Amgen.

·              “Inventing the Future: Turning Imagination into Innovation,” Tuesday, June 21, 2005 (breakfast).

Neil Cavuto, anchor of Fox Network’s “Your World with Neil Cavuto,” will moderate a panel of experts who will discuss innovation, progress and the future. Panelists include Gregory T. Lucier, CEO, Invitrogen; Julie McHugh, president, Centocor; Paul Berg, Robert W. and Vivian K. Cahill Professor of Cancer Research, emeritus, director emeritus, Beckman Center for Molecular and Genetic Medicine, Stanford University; and Andrew C. von Eschenbach, director, National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health.

·              “The Mating Game: Finding and Nurturing Partners,” Wednesday, June 22, 2005 (breakfast).

The state of Illinois and the city of Chicago, location of BIO 2006, will sponsor the Wednesday breakfast plenary session, which brings together experts to discuss the strength of partnerships, the success of relationships and examples of powerful achievements through collaboration. Ray Suarez, senior correspondent for The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer on PBS, will moderate the session. Panelists include Fereydoun Firouz, president, Serono; Dr. Richard Klausner, executive director, global health program, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; John M. Leonard, vice president, global medical and scientific affairs, Abbott Laboratories; Stelios Papadopoulos, vice chairman, SG Cowen & Co., LLC; and Wayne Pisano, head of commercial operations, Sanofi Pasteur.
