Governor Sebelius Is Strong Choice For HHS, Says BIO

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Monday, March 02, 2009) - Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) President and CEO Jim Greenwood issued the following statement today regarding President Barack Obama’s nomination of Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius to serve as Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services:

“President Obama has made a strong choice in nominating Governor Sebelius for Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS).  As a governor, former insurance commissioner and state legislator, Governor Sebelius will bring to the Department important insights and understanding of private and public health care programs.  Her experience as governor also makes her well prepared to manage HHS which includes 65,000 employees responsible for public health, food safety, drug safety, scientific research and the administration of Medicare and Medicaid.

“Governor Sebelius will take the helm at an important point in the history of the Department.  The HHS and its agencies will play a critical role as the President and Congress work to implement health care reform and increase federal funding for scientific research.  She also will help lead the Food and Drug Administration at a time when the Agency badly requires additional resources and leadership stability.

"Upon confirmation, we look forward to working with Governor Sebelius to answer the President’s call for affordable, quality health care for all Americans, his challenge to find a cure for cancer ‘in our time’ and the broad public health mission of the HHS.”
