Representative Eshoo Honored as BIO Legislator of the Year

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Thursday, July 31, 2008) - The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) announced today its selection of Congresswoman Anna Eshoo (D-CA) as a Legislator of the Year for 2007-2008.

“Representative Eshoo is a long-time champion of the biotechnology industry. As a member of the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health, she recently introduced the Pathway for Biosimilars Act.  This legislation will create a crucial regulatory pathway for FDA approval of follow-on biologic medicines, while protecting patient safety and fostering continued innovation” said BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood.

“As she represents the most biotech-intensive Congressional district in the United States, Congresswoman Eshoo has been an invaluable resource for the biotechnology community in the Bay Area as well as for the State of California and the industry at large,” said Matt Gardner, President of BayBio.  “Her leadership on numerous issues of importance to the industry and her commitment to meeting with and understanding the needs of individual biotechnology companies should serve as a model to all her colleagues in the Congress.  On behalf of the biotechnology industry in the Bay Area, we congratulate Congresswoman Eshoo on receiving this award.”

"Congresswoman Eshoo is an ardent supporter of biotechnology and has demonstrated her dedication through leadership on national policy. She understands the benefits the industry provides in the form of economic stability and more high-paying jobs for the state of California,” said David Gollaher, Ph.D., President and CEO of the California Healthcare Institute. “On behalf of California’s life sciences industry, we salute Congresswoman Eshoo’s efforts.  She is a true friend of the bioscience community and the patients that we serve."

The award will be presented today at 1:45 p.m. in Representative Eshoo’s Washington, D.C. office.
