The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) is proud to announce that Rep. Scott Peters (D), of the 52nd Congressional District of California, will deliver opening remarks at the 2013 Pacific Rim Summit on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy.  BIO’s unique conference, focusing on the growth of the industrial biotechnology sector in Asia and the Americas, will be co-organized by Biocom and held in San Diego, December 8-11, 2013 at the Westin Gaslamp Quarter.

“I am honored to welcome BIO and its member organizations to San Diego. As an increasingly world-renowned center for research and technology, our region is at the center of growth and development in innovation and the life sciences,” said Rep. Peters. “Through my work in Congress as a member of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee, as an advocate for consistent and adequate funding for basic scientific research, and as a founding member of the bipartisan Algae Caucus, I am consistently pushing for an environment that is more conducive to biotechnology growth here in the United States.”

“BIO is delighted to host Representative Peters to kick off this year’s Pacific Rim Summit,” Brent Erickson, Executive Vice President of BIO’s Industrial & Environmental Section said.  “Representative Peters has been an essential voice for the industrial bioscience sector and the many San Diego-based companies involved by supporting federal investments in advanced biofuels, renewable chemicals and biobased products. He is a strong advocate for environmental sustainability and a diverse portfolio of cleaner, cheaper and more abundant energy and manufacturing choices.”

Representative Peters is currently a member of the House Armed Services Committee and the House Committee on Science, Space, & Technology.  Additionally, he is a member of the House Sustainable Environment and Energy Coalition, and chair of its Climate Task Force.  Congressman Peters has made fostering innovation and the biosciences economy within San Diego and throughout the United States a top priority during his time served in Congress.

Now in its eighth year, the Pacific Rim Summit on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy will also address the latest issues in industrial biotechnology, including algae, advanced biofuels, biopolymers and bioplastics, dedicated energy crops, and green chemistry.  Visit http://bio.org/pacrim.
