Scientific American to Host BIO International Convention Super Session to Release 4th Annual Worldview Report and Scorecard Highlighting Emerging Markets

Washington, DC and New York, NY, Wednesday, June 6, 2012 -
The 4th Annual Scientific American Worldview Report and Scorecard - the most comprehensive country-by-country analysis of biotechnology - reveals the parameters essential for building a successful biotechnology hub in today's increasingly global industry.

The report will be released at a Super Session, titled "International Leaders Share Their Worldview: Scientific American's Regional Bio-Innovation Scorecard," and will examine the future of innovation and key drivers for growth of the global industry and highlight perspectives on how countries and regions can invest, invent and innovate to dominate the future of the sector. Speakers will address the biotechnology industry's ongoing expansion that is making it possible for a wide range of players to compete using their own capabilities or teaming up with players from around the world.

The Scientific American Worldview Scorecard features a collection of metrics that assess a country's overall success in biotechnology, as well as capabilities in particular areas of the field in general. A wide range of elements must be considered-both gross and relative-to assess a country's capabilities in biotechnology, and these metrics must adapt over time. Excelling in specific areas, such as education, IP or overall government support, can lift even unexpected countries into international prominence. These dynamics will be addressed in the BIO International Convention by global leaders.

WHO:
Moderator Fareed Zakaria, CNN Host, Editor-at-Large TIME Magazine, will lead a panel of global leaders, including:
Dr. Yücel Altunbasak, President TUBITAK, Turkey;
Derek Hanekom, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, South Africa;
Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Chairman & Managing Director Biocon Ltd.; and
Greg Lucier, CEO, Life Technologies

WHERE:       BIO International Convention at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center

WHEN:          Tuesday, June 19, 3:45pm - 5:15pm

WHY:
Scientific American's 2012 Worldview explores Emerging Markets 2.0, countries that are showing promise for future development, as well as an on-the-ground look at some of the science parks, incubators, research centers, or other hot spots of innovation that are coming into their own. This Super Session will examine the future of innovation and key drivers for growth of the global biotechnology industry. Moderated by Fareed Zakaria, host of CNN's foreign affairs show, GPS, and author of the best-selling book, The Post-American World, the session will include global biotechnology leaders sharing their perspectives on how countries and regions can invest, invent and innovate to dominate the future of the sector.
