Senator Grassley Honored as BIO Legislator of the Year

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Thursday, April 02, 2009) - The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) announced today its selection of Senator Chuck Grassley (R - IA) as a Legislator of the Year for 2008-2009. Senator Grassley received the award yesterday as part of BIO’s Legislative Day Fly-In.

“Senator Grassley’s achievements on both the Finance and Agriculture Committees have been instrumental for the development of renewable fuels, particularly corn-based ethanol. Additionally, his strident support of ethanol has been instrumental in deflecting false arguments,” said BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood. “We salute him for supporting public policy that enables our industry to pursue its full potential.”

“The state of Iowa has and will continue to benefit tremendously from agricultural biotechnology advancements. Senator Grassley’s leadership in this area has been crucial for the development of this industry within our state,” said Doug Getter, Executive Director of the Iowa Biotechnology Association.

During the BIO Legislative Day Fly-In, more than 250 biotechnology industry representatives from 36 states, including Iowa, participated in hundreds of meetings with key Members of the House and Senate. Participants discussed issues critical to the biotechnology industry, including biosimilars, Food and Drug Administration appropriations, biofuels, and patent reform.
