Toward a Sustainable Bioenergy Platform
ID: 4556

Abstract: Sustainability is a word that is frequently misused. Often, certain critical components of a so-called sustainable process are discounted, and thus the sustainability is an illusion. An obvious example of an unsustainable process would be one that is heavily dependent upon fossil fuels. Some "renewable" processes today fall into this category, and yet we still pretend these processes are renewable because they have a renewable component.

In order to meet future energy demands, truly sustainable approaches must be developed. These processes must be capable of ultimately operating with no fossil fuel inputs, they must not strain water resources, and they must protect the soil and the environment.

A holistic approach based on these criteria will be discussed, using the Big Island of Hawaii as an example.
