James D. Watson Helix Awards, 2006

INTERNATIONAL:  NOVO NORDISK INC., PRINCETON, N.J.

The James D. Watson Helix Award, the bioscience industry’s only award for outstanding corporate achievement, was created to celebrate the importance, excellence and creative character of the industry. The award recognizes biotechnology companies that have distinguished themselves by setting a singular standard of corporate leadership as reflected in performance in three distinct areas: scientific innovation, company growth and corporate citizenship.

The James D. Watson Helix Award was founded by the State University of New York at Stony Brook and its Center for Biotechnology. The 2006 awards will be presented at the Bio 2006 Annual International Convention.

Biotechnology Heritage Awa rd, 2005
PAUL BERG

The Chemical Heritage Foundation and BIO presented the 2005 Biotechnology Heritage Award to Dr. Paul Berg, Nobel laureate, innovator and biotechnology pioneer. The presentation was made at BIO’s Board of Directors dinner during the Bio 2005 convention in Philadelphia.

GOVERNOR OF THE YEAR, 2005
GOVERNOR JEB BUSH OF FLORIDA

Governor Bush was recognized for several biotechnology accomplishments, including signing into law the Technology Development Act, which, among other things, establishes new centers of excellence for regenerative medicine, biomedical research and marine biotechnology. The governor was also instrumental in bringing the Scripps Research Institute to Florida, signing into a law a bill to provide a one-time investment of $310 million in the project.

AWARD FOR LEADERSHIP EXCELLENCE, 2005
MISSOURI GOVERNOR MATT BLUNT

Governor Blunt has made the development of biotechnology a major tenet of his administration. The new Governor’s Advisory Council on Plant Biotechnology is an example of his efforts to promote the technology across all applications.

LEGISLATORS OF THE YEAR, 2005
Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.):For leadership as Chairman of the Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry and for his commitment to agricultural biotechnology.

Senator Michael Enzi (R-Wyo.):For a thoughtful and responsive approach as Chairman of the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions when dealing with issues such as drug safety, importation and access to affordable health care.

Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.):For her role in shaping favorable Senate consideration of key agricultural and health care issues, as well as her support for farm exports and renewable biofuel energy.

Representative Mike Castle (R-Del.):For championing research using stem cells and somatic cell nuclear transfer.

Representative Frank Lucas (R-Okla.):For promoting agricultural biotechnology, advocating for a science-based regulatory system for animal biotechnology, and making the effort to reduce trade barriers for agricultural products.

State Representative Kenny A. Wilk (R-Kan.):
For leadership in securing passage of the Kansas Economic Growth Act of 2004.
