Dr. Schilling, together with Dr. Bernhard Palsson, founded Genomatica in 2000 and serves as the Chief Executive Officer. Dr. Schilling has been instrumental in forming the integrated technologies that generate Genomatica's ongoing value, and establishing the company's vision to enable transformation of the chemical industry through sustainable biomanufacturing. As company president, Dr. Schilling secured commercial collaborations and licensing transactions with global chemical companies including Dow Chemical, DSM and Unilever. He led the company's successful efforts to secure financing from leading venture capital firms in 2007, which has enabled the current phase of the company's growth. Under his direction, Genomatica has been awarded over 30 federal research and development grants from agencies including the Department of Energy, National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, and the National Science Foundation.
Dr. Schilling, a recipient of the 2003 top 100 young innovators award from MIT's Technology Review magazine, and an R&D100 Award for SimPheny, the computational modeling and simulation component of Genomatica's integrated technology platform bringing best-in-class computational modeling together with state-of-the-art experimentation and chemical process engineering.
Dr. Schilling received his doctorate in bioengineering from the University of California, San Diego where he was a Powell Foundation and Whitaker Foundation Fellow. He also holds a bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering from Duke University where he was a Howard Hughes Undergraduate Fellow.
