June Cohan

Senior Legal Advisor

June E. Cohan is a Senior Legal Advisor in the Office of Patent Legal Administration at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Her duties at the USPTO include developing policy positions for examination issues, drafting and implementing rules, acting as a reexamination legal advisor for inter partes and ex parte reexamination proceedings, and providing examiner guidance and training. She specializes in patent subject matter eligibility, Section 112, and fee-related issues.

Prior to joining the USPTO in 2013, Ms. Cohan practiced patent law in the Washington, D.C. area for 16 years. Her practice included litigation of patent infringement and Section 337 actions in the federal courts and before the U.S. International Trade Commission, as well as patent prosecution, opinions, and client counseling in the biotechnology and software areas. She has also taught advanced patent law and intellectual property courses for many years at Georgetown University and George Washington University.

Ms. Cohan received her bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Virginia, and her law degree from Georgetown University Law Center, where she was Editor and Writing Program Director for the Georgetown Journal of International Law. She is a member of the Virginia bar.
