Anthrax Attacks 10 Year Anniversary: BioCentury Looks at Preparedness

September 28, 2011
A decade ago in the weeks following the terrorist attacks of September 11th, the nation faced yet another terrorist threat. Letters containing anthrax spores were mailed to two U.S. senators and several media outlets, killing five people and sickening 17 others. It was the deadliest biological attack in U.S. history, and resulted in the largest and most expensive investigation in FBI history. Biosecurity experts believe that another bioterrorist attack is imminent, and the impact could be much greater. Are we prepared for such a threat?

In a BioCentury This Week broadcast entitled Bioterrorism: Are We Safe? Call to Action, biosecurity experts Dr. Tom Inglesby of the University of Pittsburgh Center for Biosecurity and Col. Randall Larsen of the WMD Center, and industry leaders Eric Richman, President and CEO of PharmAthene, and Dr. George Painter, Chairman and Chief Scientific Officer of Chimerix, tackled tough questions about what steps must be taken to improve U.S. preparedness.
