California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom Welcome’s BIO 2016 to San Francisco

November 5, 2015
Lieutenant Governor of California and former San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom gave an inspiring and supportive response when recently asked about the return of the BIO International Convention to his hometown in 2016:

“We couldn’t be more enthusiastic to have everybody back, but this time with passion and enthusiasm, and with one fundamental thing on our mind – and that is appreciation and a readiness to say two simple words: thank you!”

Newsom recalled a less enthusiastic reception by city officials and residents to the 2004 BIO Annual Convention, which took place in San Francisco, compared to the more positive present-day sentiments of the biotechnology industry in the city, saying “Look how far we’ve come in a short decade.”

The Lt. Governor credits the change in public consciousness and understanding about biotechnology in the years since BIO’s first appearance in San Francisco, in part, to BIO:

“We’ve all been educated, the officials at City Hall and so many citizens across the city and state – in the country – to the extraordinary inventiveness and extraordinary innovation coming from BIO...”

The 2016 BIO International Convention – the largest global biotechnology gathering – will take place June 6-9 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, CA. BIO is excited to return to the city known as the birthplace of biotech! We invite you to “imagine” with us in San Francisco and help bring the newest innovations and partnerships to life. BIO has secured 35 hotels within a mile of Moscone Center and we encourage attendees to book housing now in advance of registration opening in mid-January.
