Countdown to BIO 2014: San Diego Highlights

With the 2014 BIO International Convention only six days away, now is the perfect time to begin planning for some fun: what to do, what to see, and where to go. San Diego offers every kind of activity imaginable; from world-renowned attractions, unlimited outdoor recreation, a thriving arts and culture community, sightseeing tours and award-winning restaurants, you’re sure to find a host of things to entertain and inspire.

Below are just a few recommendations of things to see and do while in San Diego. Feel free to stop by the California Pavilion to truly get the insider’s track. We look forward to welcoming you to San Diego!

1. Balboa Park (across from San Diego Zoo)

  • Botanical museum

  • Museum of Man

  • Art Museum

  • Museum of Chocolate

  • Prado Restaurant

2. La Jolla Cave

  • You can enter through a shop and walk down 100+ steps into a huge cave that looks out onto the Pacific

3. La Jolla Art Galleries

  • Right along Prospect

4. Seal Beach

  • Hundreds of seals hang out there; and it smells like it  but very neat to see

5. George’s Ocean Terrace

  • Rooftop bar / restaurant a few blocks down from the Grande Colonial in La Jolla; great place to sit outside and watch the sunset

6. Mt. Soledad

  • Mountain top above La Jolla

  • Great views of the coastline

7. Pacific Beach / Mission Beach Pier

  • Tons of bars and restaurants and a boardwalk to walk along

  • Great pier to watch surfers and sunsets

  • Tower 23 restaurant is a great spot for food/drinks

8. Sunset Cliffs

  • Less casual place to watch the sunset in Ocean Beach

9. Torrey Pines State Reserve

  • If you have time to hike / walk, there are some breathtaking views

10. The Lodge at Torrey Pines

  • Amazing ‘Arts and Crafts’ style restaurant on the world-famous golf course

  • Great food (get the burger!) & great views

11. The Salk Institute

  • Famous for its architecture, worth parking & getting out of car to see buildings and infinity pool

12. Seaport Village

  • Near downtown

  • Fun shops/restaurants

  • Great street entertainment there on weekends

  • Fun walk along Harbor Drive near Star of India ship etc

13. Gaslamp District

  • Downtown San Diego hub

  • Fun restaurants, clubs, bars

  • Petco Park is also nearby

14. Old Town

  • Fun museums/ shops

  • Haunted Whaley House

  • Hand-made tortillas

  • Live street entertainment

15. Belmont Park

  • Mini amusement park on boardwalk in Mission Beach

  • Old school wooden rollercoaster

  • Other carnival like rides

  • Fun/beachy shops

16. Presidio Park

  • Great view of San Diego

  • Fun place to explore/walk around

  • Just north of Old Town

17. Flower Fields of Carlsbad

  • Gorgeous open space of flowers

  • Better to visit during spring – must see!

18. Coronado Island

  • Hotel Del

  • Dog Beach

19. Del Mar

  • Day at the Races

  • Dog Beach

  • Brigantine for a Fish Taco

20. Encinitas

  • Swami’s Café

  • Self Realization Center Botanical Gardens (across the street from Swami’s)

  • Swami’s Break to watch the surfers
