Getting Ready for #RDD2015 (Rare Disease Day 2015)

February 23, 2015
Rare Disease Day is just around the corner on February 28th. R&D investment into rare disease research by venture capitalists was a major focus of BIO’s recent Venture Funding of Therapeutic Innovation between 2004-2013, available for download here.

One of the more interesting findings in the study is the large increase of funding by venture capitalists for rare disease R&D over the past decade, as this chart illustrates:

Over the last 10 years, there has been an increase in investment into rare diseases, with the highest amounts (over $500 million/ year) seen recently in 2012 and 2013. As the chart shows, most funding is directed to clinical trial stage companies, with the exception of 2013 when nearly half of the funding went into Preclinical stage companies.

To prepare for and raise awareness of all of the activity surrounding Rare Disease Day, many groups have been hosting twitter chats to discuss rare disease research and advocacy. Below are some excerpts from some of last week’s twitter chats.

NORD & Dr. Richard Besser of ABC News co-hosted a chat on Conquering Rare Disease.

Treatment Diaries and Give Rare co-hosted a tweetchat on rare disease collaboration.
