#GivingTuesday: What Group Will You Be Supporting?

December 2, 2014
Founded in 2012 by a group of friends and partners from 92nd Street Y, #GivingTuesday is the global day dedicated to giving back. According to the founding group, in three short years #GivingTuesday has become an annual celebration of giving that unites 10,000+ organizations worldwide under one common purpose: to give back. According to a recent NPR article, charitable organizations say online donations on #GivingTuesday last year were 90 percent higher than the year before.

Today (and every year on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving) charities, families, businesses and students can embrace the generous spirit of the holiday season and inspire action around charitable giving and support the patient group or disease foundation of your choice. The movement has quickly gained momentum, thanks in no small part to social media. As we saw with last summer’s ALS Ice Bucket Challenge that went viral, social media is a powerful new tool for raising money for patient groups and disease foundations. After you have given, be sure to tell everyone you can through your various social media channels. As the word continues to spread, the giving continues to increase.
