Grocery Store GMO Myths: Can you help spot them?

GMO misinformation is all around us, especially in our grocery aisles. GMO misinformation online and in the media is at its peak, perpetuating anti-scientific claims and fears about GMOs. This (relatively) recent influx in GMO fearmongering shapes people’s perception on GMOs and can negatively impact their food choices, instilling guilt or shame in choosing to purchase foods containing ingredients derived from GMO crops.

GMO Answers volunteer expert Chef Jonathan Bardzik took shoppers on a mission to bust the most common myths. GMO Answers held Facebook Live event on Thursday, March 15th  to help launch our GMO Myth Spotting campaign.

He highlighted the facts about and benefits of GMOs, and pointed out misinformation and fearmongering about labeling products non-GMO where there is no GMO equivalent. He also explained how the non-GMO label tells you nothing about the ingredients, nutrition, or safety of said products. It's important for people to know what's in their food and how it was grown - but the information should be fact-based and scientifically backed, not driven by myths and fear.

As Jonathan notes, the only regulated label information comes from a product’s nutrition facts areas. Anything on the front of a box outside of that area isn’t regulated, and may or may not be true. It’s mostly just marketing terms.

So, have you seen “GMO-free” pink Himalayan salt at a store near you? How about “GMO-free” water? Neither of those products have genes that could be edited — but Jonathan found both of them at a local grocery store.
