Massimiliano Paganelli, PhD, MD

Clinician, scientist and entrepreneur, Massimiliano “Max” Paganelli is co-founder and CEO of Morphocell Technologies Inc. He is also associate professor of pediatrics at the Université de Montréal, pediatric transplant hepatologist and director of the Liver Tissue Engineering and Cell Therapy laboratory at the CHU Sainte-Justine University Hospital Center, in Montreal. He completed his medical studies and training in pediatrics at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. After subspecialty training in hepatology and liver transplantation at Cliniques Saint-Luc in Brussels, Belgium, he completed a PhD in hepatology and cell therapy at the Université catholique de Louvain. He was recruited by the CHU Sainte-Justine in 2015 to bring to Canada his research on the use of stem cells to model and treat liver diseases. He is a FRQS Junior 2 clinician-scientist and his research is funded by the Stem Cell Network and CIHR, among many others. Dr. Paganelli authored several papers and book chapters and filed various patent applications. For his research, he was recognized with the 2009 ESPGHAN “Charlotte Anderson” award, the 2015 Gilead Sciences “Research Scholar in Liver Disease” award and the 2021 “Effervescence Star” award.
