Equity by Design: Utility of a Metrics Framework and Metrics To Evaluate Progress on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Clinical Research

4:15 PM - 5:15 PM (PDT), Tuesday, June 14, 2022 ・ Upper Level, Session Room 3

The inescapable visibility of health inequalities during the COVID-19 pandemic has animated calls to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in clinical research. In late 2020, the Multi-Regional Clinical Trials Center of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard (MRCT Center) convened representatives from professional, trade, academic, and patient advocacy organizations (the “Roundtable”) to coordinate individual organizational DEI efforts in clinical research. The Roundtable prioritized development of a metrics framework to define guidepost measures and to monitor goals and processes. The framework is structured to enable users to navigate through progressively more detailed qualitative and quantitative measures by theme. The panel will share lessons learned through the development and pilot testing of this Equity by Design Metrics Framework, with members of the Roundtable and BIO additionally discussing their own institutional approaches to evaluation.
