Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, vaccine developers worked with manufacturing partners around the world to get vaccine into various regions. These efforts highlighted the need for more geographic diversity in the production capabilities for vaccines for both routine immunization and pandemic response. South Africa has long been an important country in terms of vaccine manufacturing on the continent. Two key South African leaders will discuss the role the country’s manufacturers and regulators played in driving the response to COVID in Africa. They will also discuss the multiple approaches for expanding manufacturing capacity that are currently underway on the continent with the goal of supplying routine immunizations across the African countries and increasing resilience. Our speakers will discuss the manufacturing and logistical aspects of growing manufacturing capacity in South Africa, including the regulatory infrastructure, workforce development and sustainability and what these developments mean for overarching efforts across the continent.
