Dr. Gopika Nair is a Scientist at the University of California-San Francisco in Prof. Matthias Hebrok’s laboratory. Her interest has always been piqued by the applicability of stem cells to model human development & disease, and their therapeutic potential in treating diabetes. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology from VIT, India. She further pursed her doctoral studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she worked on the role of transcription factors in specifying the fate of embryonic stem cells to the pancreatic lineage under the mentorship of Dr. Jon Odorico. At a young age, she has several outstanding achievements under her belt. Recently at UCSF, she led a team to a groundbreaking discovery on the method to generate fully functional mature beta cells from human pluripotent stem cells. She is keen to translate this technology into the clinic as cell therapy as well as inventing HTS platforms for novel therapeutics discovery.
