BIO 2003 Convention Draws Worldwide Media Attention to Global Impact of Science Industry

WASHINGTON (June 16, 2003) — The nation's capital will be the epicenter of biotechnology news-making announcements from June 21-25, 2003, as world leaders of biotech innovation gather for the Biotechnology Industry Organization's Annual Convention at the Washington Convention Center.

With more than 30 press conferences scheduled on-site during the week of the convention, registered journalists and conference attendees will hear NASA representatives speak to biotechnology's reach into outer space, an international perspective on the economic and environmental impact of agricultural biotechnology in Europe, and how medical research and biotech therapies are revolutionizing treatments for various cancers.

"For five days, Washington, D.C., will be the absolute center of the global biotech community," said BIO President Carl B. Feldbaum. "Right now we expect to have 15,000 biotech scientists and business leaders from 47 states and more than 50 nations. The record number of press conferences reflects the growing beneficial impact biotechnology is having on our health and our lives. We have a number of great stories to tell."

Press conference topics focus on local and regional biotech impact as well, with the University of Maryland's Biotechnology Institute, BayBio and tri-state biotech companies making media announcements. This year's 35 scheduled press conferences far exceed the volume of media announcements held on BIO convention sites in past years. Research companies, academic institutions and government entities spearheading biotechnology projects will utilize BIOTV and the convention media center to focus the worldwide spotlight on biotechnology advances.
