BIO Adds Democratic Political Insider Matthew Schumaker to Its Advocacy Staff

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Monday, February 09, 2009) - Jim Greenwood, President and CEO of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) is pleased to announce the appointment of Matthew Schumaker to the position of Managing Director, Federal Government Relations

Schumaker most recently served at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, where he guided the Committee’s independent expenditures in more than twenty competitive House races

Prior to moving to the DCCC, Schumaker served as the first ever Executive Director of the New Democrat Coalition, the largest centrist coalition in the House of Representatives.   Schumaker also previously served as Communications Director and Legislative Assistant for Representative Darlene Hooley (D, OR).

“BIO’s advocacy operation represents one of the most strategic and transformational industries in the world. Matthew’s strength of experience on Capitol Hill will further enhance our efforts to advocate on behalf of our 1,200 members before the White House, Congress and regulatory agencies,” said Greenwood.

“BIO is engaged with the new Congress and Administration as we work to ensure the proper policies and incentives are in place to further expand our nation’s innovation economy. America remains the world leader in biotechnology innovation in the fields of cutting-edge health care, agriculture and environmental products, and BIO is proud of the industry it serves,” Greenwood concluded.
