The Director will report to the Vice President and will be responsible for developing policy options for the IES Governing Board and section working groups and advocating on their behalf. The position will primarily be focused on issues related to industrial biotechnology and the biobased economy; including, but not limited to, biofuels, biobased products, renewable chemicals, and feedstocks. The Director will organize and staff IES working group(s), committees, and IES board level meetings. The Director will be the section’s point person on all outreach to Congress and the administration.
Responsibilities:
- Work with the section Vice President to develop policy and advocacy strategies for biofuels, biobased products, renewable chemicals, and feedstocks.
- Develop policy documents and prepare materials used to lobby Congress and the administration on industrial biotechnology and the biobased economy.
- Coordinate with BIO Federal Government Relations team on advocacy of Congress and the administration.
- Lead BIO’s efforts in drafting and submitting comments on proposed federal regulations that impact the biobased economy.
- Provide policy guidance to member companies, serving as lead staff for the IES Sustainable Fuels and Biomanufacturing policy working groups.
- Work with BIO Communications Department on press materials and messaging.
- Participate in press conferences and conference calls as needed.
- Make public presentations at conferences and meetings organized by other associations or entities.
- Help organize technical conference tracks, schedule speakers, and recruit sponsors for the BIO Impact Ag & Environment Conference.
- Travel to domestic and international conferences as needed.
- Assist in seeking out and recruiting new BIO IES members and sponsors for IES-supported events.
- Assist international and state level advocacy as needed.
- Coordinate between BIO sections, primarily Food and Agriculture, in support of cross-section policy goals
- Other tasks as assigned.
Requirements:
- Excellent analytical and judgment skills.
- Must be a skilled writer and be able to communicate with different audiences.
- Some technical knowledge about industrial and environmental biotechnology helpful.
- Should be very well organized.
- Superb communication skills, both in person and over the phone.
- Highly driven and results-oriented a must.
- Exceptionally detail oriented and organized.
- Computer literate; Word, Excel, database systems.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- 8 to 10 years in workforce.
- Experience in Congress or the federal government useful.
- Experience in the scale up of innovative biotechnology solutions useful
- Legal/Policy and/or science background very helpful.
- Educational background in chemistry, biology, or biotechnology preferred.
- Knowledge of agriculture, biobased products, renewable chemicals, environment or energy policy a must.
