#BIO2016: Establishing a Biobased Economy Value Chain for Brand Owners

Imagine establishing a biobased economy value chain for high value renewable chemicals going commercial in a synergistic pathway. On Tuesday, June 07, 2016, panelists described their technologies and roles in creating a biobased economy value chain during the "Establishing a Renewable Chemicals Biobased Economy Value Chain for Brand Owners" Session.

Moderated by Brian Baynes, CEO of Joule Unlimited, the panel included Neil Goldsmith, CEO of Evolva, José M. Laplaza, Ph.D., Vice President of Development at Verdezyne, and Christophe Schilling, CEO of Genomatica.

Neil Goldsmith, CEO of Evolva, kicked-off his remarks by stating that "if we want to focus on the value of the product, then we need to concentrate on what's best for the end user." He argued that we need to work across all aspects to have a great product on the market.
"Evolva makes ingredients that matter!"

Goldsmith focused his remarks on three specific Evolva products - Stevia, Nootkatone, and Resveratol. He elaborated on the value and discussed supply chain issues for each of these products.

He concluded his remarks by stressing the importance of consumer transparency. He argued that consumers should be able to easily access more information about their food whether it be a QR code, website, etc.

Christophe Schilling, CEO of Genomatica, spoke on his company's platform to industrialize biotechnology. He states that the platform itself is backed by a strong IP portfolio.

Schilling discussed how Genomatica's business model is tailored to product and market opportunities enabled by the company's innovations. He discussed the value of having multiple partners along the value chain.

Christophe Schilling concluded his remarks by highlighting Genomatica's GENO BDO™ process:
"Genomatica's GENO BDO™ process is the only way to produce renewable 1,4-butanediol on a commercial scale at a competitive manufacturing cost basis."

José M. Laplaza, Ph.D., Vice President of Development, rounded off the panel's remarks by discussing how Verdezyne is providing renewable options to brand owners to use in their products. Specifically, Laplaza spoke to the company's biobased alternatives to Adipic acid, Dodecanedioic acid (DDDA), and Sebacic acid.
"Verdezyne prides itself on developing a highly-proprietary platform for engineering yeast to metabolize multiple non-food-based renewable feedstocks to produce a number of widely-used, high-value chemicals."

Laplaza concluded his remarks by discussing Verdezyne's BIOLON™ Dodecanedioic acid (DDDA) and its use in the production of high performance nylon 6,12, molding resins, as well as adhesives and powder coatings.
