Cornelius Schmaltz currently leads the Unit for the “European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator” in the European Commission’s European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA). Since 2006 he has held various positions at the European Commission (since 2015 as Head of Unit), mostly in the area of health research and innovation. Cornelius received his MD and his training as a board-certified paediatrician from the University of Freiburg/Germany. Following a postdoc at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston and a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, he joined the Volkswagen Foundation in Germany, as program manager in Medicine. In 2012 Cornelius obtained a M.A. in International Relations from the Free University in Berlin. He is also the co-author of 11 original papers in peer-reviewed journals, including Nature Medicine and Nature Genetics.
