BIO Digital starts today at 11 AM ET/8 AM PT. Good Day BIO will be bringing you the biggest headlines from the week’s educational sessions, which feature an all-star line-up of biotech’s brightest minds—including a few famous faces you’ve gotten to know well over the past few months.

In today’s news, we launched a new campaign to tell biotech's incredible story. We also take a detailed look at how cows can help treat COVID-19. Oh, yeah, we also released our new report on the bioscience economy, which we'll dissect later. As always scroll to the end for news from Washington. Here are around 860 words, 4 minutes, 15 seconds.

How to follow BIO Digital:
  • Head to the BIO Digital Live Blog, where we’ve got a team of writers bringing you the highlights, live and in real time as it’s happening.
  • Join the conversation at @IAmBiotech and @BIOConvention. #BIODigital
  • Did we give you FOMO? It’s not too late to register for full access (including BIO One-on-One Partnering) or our education-only pass.

What we’re watching today: BIO’s leadership kick off the week by explaining why this is the industry’s finest hour (11 AM ET/8 AM PT), then Dr. Bryan Wilson of FDA’s Office of Tissues and Advanced Therapies will join a panel on getting new cell and gene therapies to market (12 PM ET/9 AM PT). This afternoon, BIO’s Phyllis Arthur will talk with some of the biggest names in the COVID-19 fight (1:30 PM ET/10:30 AM PT), and Johnson & Johnson’s Seema Kumar will lead a discussion on how to boost public trust and engagement in science (4 PM ET/1 PM PT).

Stay tuned to the BIO Digital Live Blog for our round-the-clock coverage of news and highlights, and if you’re registered, head to the BIO Digital Hubb to watch them live.

"I am BIO" campaign launches today

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown the world the importance of science and biotech breakthroughs—and in the coming weeks and months, we’ll be working hard to change the dialogue about science in the country.

That’s why we’re launching the I am BIO campaign. This campaign will show how biotechnology innovation is leading the charge to get the world back on track and put a face to biotech by showing the hidden heroes in our labs.

We start by showcasing researchers at Merck and IMV, a high school student finding a way to reuse gray water for irrigation, and a seventh grader who did a research project on video games and depression and plans to become a vet.

Who we’ll feature: people who are making an impact on society with science, as well as those whose lives have been changed because of scientific breakthroughs.

Who we’ll share them with: patients, consumers, lawmakers, media, and even our critics, so everyone can understand how biotech employees are innovators who are changing the world.

But we need YOU to share your story! We developed an easy-to-use app to allow Apple and Android users to record short videos and send them to us. From there, our team will edit the video, work with you on changes, and distribute them. (And don’t worry, you’ll be able to review it before it goes public!)

We know that COVID-19 was of zoonotic origin. Is it possible that a potential treatment lies in the reverse—human to animal?

SAB Biotherapeutics thinks so—and they’re using cows to create fully human polyclonal antibodies to create a natural immune response to the virus, as we investigate in a new blog post for our Biotechnology: Beyond Imagination series.

How does it work? SAB scientists create a cow embryo with parts of human chromosomes, including human antibody genes, and turn off the animal antibody genes.

Once grown, researchers inject a non-infectious part of the novel coronavirus into the cow, which produces human antibodies to the virus. Scientists draw blood from the cows, extract and purify the antibodies with the hope that these antibodies may treat the coronavirus in humans.

What's next? The company announced last month that SAB-185, the therapeutic candidate, has neutralizing antibodies that are four times higher than the human plasma samples evaluated. With this promising result, SAB has started manufacturing SAB-185 to support clinical development and human trails, which the company expects to begin in early summer.
