U.S. Bioscience Industry Powers Over $3 Trillion in Economic Output, New Report Finds
WASHINGTON, DC (October 28, 2026) – Today, the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) and the Council of State Bioscience Associations (CSBA) released new national and state-level data on the U.S. bioscience industry’s economic impact.
The report, “The U.S. Bioscience Economy: Advancing Innovation and Strengthening States and Regions,” examines the industry’s economic footprint through employment, wages, business establishments, university research and development, access to capital, and other measures.
From 2021 through 2025, the U.S. bioscience industry had a significant, broad-based economic footprint and impact on the nation’s economy. The industry in 2025:
- Generated $3.19 trillion in total economic output.
- Directly employed 2.31 million people, a 7% increase from 2021.
- Operated more than 156,000 business establishments, a 22% increase from 2021.
- Supported 9.67 million direct, indirect, and induced jobs when considering the industry’s broader economic impacts.
- Increased employment in 41 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.
“America’s bioscience industry continues to create jobs, fuel economic growth, and deliver life-saving medicines to patients. The United States must continue promoting an environment that supports scientific discovery and strengthens our leadership in biotechnology. This report makes clear that we cannot take that strength for granted. Now is the time to invest in America's biotech ecosystem, advance policies that foster innovation and lay the groundwork for America’s long-term leadership for years to come. The public policies enacted today at the national and state level will directly impact whether American biotech continues to thrive here at home and where the next generation of breakthroughs will be developed,” said John F. Crowley, president and CEO of BIO.
“This report series has tracked the U.S. bioscience industry’s growth and its role in state and regional economies for more than two decades. The latest findings show how the bioscience ecosystem can sustain long-term growth and competitiveness. The data makes clear that continued investment in American biotech innovation delivers lasting economic and societal benefits for the country,” said Pete Pellerito, BIO Senior Policy Adviser for Federal and State Economic Development and Technology Transfer Initiatives.
“The value of this report series is not only in measuring where the U.S. bioscience industry stands today, but in identifying the trends that will shape its future. The latest data demonstrate the industry’s significant economic impact and vast development opportunities for states and regions, while also underscoring the need to sustain the innovation ecosystem that drives its success,” said Ryan Helwig, Principal and Senior Director with TEConomy Partners.
“America’s edge comes from its regional ecosystems: the research universities, startups, and manufacturers that states work hard to attract and grow. This report shows that strength reaches well beyond a few major hubs into communities of every size. If we want the next generation of medicines invented and made in America, states will be on the front lines,” said Mike Guerra, Chair of the Council of State Bioscience Associations (CSBA).
Together, the findings show how the bioscience industry advances innovation, supports jobs, and creates opportunities for communities across the United States.
The report is the 12th edition of a biennial series developed by TEConomy Partners and BIO since 2004. It examines the performance of the U.S. bioscience industry and its innovation ecosystem at the national, state, and metropolitan levels. The report and individual fact sheets for all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, can be found at www.bio.org/jobs.
