Yasuhiro Fujiwara, MD, PhD

Yasuhiro Fujiwara, MD, PhD, became Chief Executive of Japan’s Pharmaceuticals and Medical Device Agency (PMDA) in April 2019. He specializes in Medical Oncology, specifically systemic therapy for Breast Cancer, Molecular and Clinical pharmacological mechanism of drug resistance, and Regulatory Science for drug development. He has authored or co-authored over 220 original articles in peer-reviewed journals, including Nature Reviews Drug Discovery, Lancet Oncology, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Cancer Research and Annals of Oncology. Prior to his role at PMDA, he was deputy director of the National Cancer Center Hospital, and before thatserved as a deputy director of the Evaluation Division II of the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Evaluation Center of the Ministry of Health and Welfare and Labor. He also served as a Deputy Secretary General of Office of Medical Innovation, Cabinet Secretariat of the Japanese Government from 2011 to 2013. He is a member of American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Association for Cancer Research. He is also a board member of Japanese Society of Medical Oncology and on the Editorial Board of Cancer Chemotherapy and Pharmacology; Investigation New Drugs; Asian-Pacific Journal of Clinical Oncology; Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology, and Cancer Science. He received MD and PhD in Hiroshima University (Japan), and completed Fellows in University of Chicago and Johns Hopkins Oncology Center (US) and University of Maryland Cancer Center (US).
