IP for AI: Expanding a Biopharma IP Portfolio to Protect AI and Data Innovations

3:00 PM - 4:00 PM (EDT), Tuesday, June 6, 2023 ・ Session Room 254B
As computational analysis and informatics play an increasingly important role in R&D, biopharma executives and in-house counsel are tasked with protecting their company’s investments and innovations in AI, software, and data science. These decisions may be routine for more traditional biopharma work, but counsel, executives, or founders may be less familiar with factors that can guide whether to pursue patents on certain AI-related innovations, or which aspects of such innovations may be more valuable to protect than others, or how to preserve the competitive edge offered by data sets. The session will provide a brief overview of IP options for protecting AI and data, followed by a moderated discussion of how in-house counsel at a small biopharma company, a large biopharma company, and a research institution choose between these options to protect their colleagues’ work.
