The Cancer Moonshot in Africa: Improving Cancer Patient Outcomes through Public-Private Partnerships

9:00 AM - 10:00 AM (EDT), Thursday, June 8, 2023 ・ Session Room 208
During the recent U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit in December 2022, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden recognized the overwhelming need for public-private partnerships (PPPs) to “make a quantum leap” and achieve the U.S. Cancer Moonshot goals. The White House announced its commitment to extending the Cancer Moonshot to Africa through multiple actions and initiatives. Industry’s role in achieving the Moonshot goals globally, and specifically in Africa, cannot be overstated.

Innovation and new developments in the oncology field have significantly contributed to the steady decline in cancer death rates in the U.S. over the past three decades. Unfortunately, Africa is not benefiting from these new developments, and instead is facing a cancer crisis with new cases and deaths expected to nearly double by 2040.

Recognizing the critical role of the private sector in improving and scaling access to innovative, high-quality cancer medicines and technologies, BVGH is forging cross-sector PPPs with African healthcare leaders to change the cancer paradigm on the continent. Driven by Africa, for Africa, BVGH’s African Access Initiative (AAI) has partnered with eight African countries—Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Kenya, Lesotho, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, and Tanzania—to scale sustainable access to cancer drugs and technologies, strengthen healthcare infrastructure, build clinical oncology capacity, address the cancer data gap in Africa through clinical trials, and expand cancer awareness.

In this session, leaders from all key sectors will present examples of PPPs that are delivering U.S. FDA-approved treatments to patients, building state-of-the-art cancer centers, empowering cancer researchers through training and participation in international clinical trials, and leapfrogging international practices across Africa. Lessons learned and best practices in managing effective global oncology PPPs will be shared. Opportunities to expand the reach and impacts of presenters’ PPPs—under the auspices of AAI and the Cancer Moonshot—to save cancer patients’ lives will be explored.
