Member Benefits by Sector: Agriculture & Environment
To overcome today’s global challenges — and set forth towards a sustainable future — we must embrace the key role biotechnology plays in protecting our planet’s resources, driving a strong economy and improving people’s lives. From innovations in food and on the farm, to biobased manufacturing and green energy breakthroughs, advances in biotechnology bring solutions to challenges facing agriculture and the environment.
BIO’s commitment to agriculture and the environment is supporting biology-based breakthroughs at all stages of development and supporting technology developers of all types and sizes. We want to be the home for innovation taking place in:
There are 5 trillion pieces of plastic floating in our oceans. Relying on petroleum-derived products is harming our planet. Through biobased manufacturing, we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make the same products that are renewable, recyclable or biodegradable, minimizing environmental impact.
The negative impacts of climate change, including evolving pests and diseases, are threatening the way we grow crops and produce food. Advances in food and farm innovation use biology-based tools like gene editing to improve plants, enhance animal health, and use natural resources more efficiently to make our food system more sustainable.
The transportation sector is the largest contributor of greenhouse gas emissions. As we look to decarbonize travel — on the road and in the air — sustainable fuels are increasingly important because we can’t rely solely on electric vehicles. Biotech companies are going beyond ethanol and developing low carbon fuels from renewable sources like agricultural residues, industrial waste gases, and algae.
