Good Day BIO Newsletter  •  April 4, 2020
It’s the weekend, and we hope you are finding a little rest, relaxation, and joy at home.  In today’s Special Weekend Edition of Good Day BIO, we’re taking a brief break from all the news surrounding COVID-19 to share the latest episode of the I AM BIO podcast: Sickle Cell Saviors. Sickle cell disease is an inherited red blood cell disease that can cause debilitating pain and lifelong complications. In the United States, the disease disproportionately affects African Americans.  In November, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Global Blood Therapeutics’ Oxbryta, the first drug that attacks the underlying cause of sickle cell disease.  In this episode, you'll hear from three inspiring guests: Global Blood Therapeutics CEO Dr. Ted Love, who talks about the history of the disease and how GBT’s diverse, majority-minority workforce drove this groundbreaking discovery. Mapillar Dahn, Founder of the My Three Sicklers Sickle Cell Foundation, who has three daughters born with the disease. She talks about the realities of discrimination in U.S. health systems. Dr. Helen Torley, CEO of Halozyme and the leader of BIO’s Workforce Development, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, who explains how BIO is working to create a new generation of diverse leadership in the biotech industry, and how the sickle cell breakthrough shows why it's important for biotech workforces to represent the communities they serve. Why it matters: Whether it’s fighting Covid-19 or looking for innovative ways to treat other devastating diseases, providing hope and saving lives is what the men and women of the biopharmaceutical industry strive for every day. Listen to the full podcast by visiting www.bio.org/podcast or wherever you get your podcast fix including Apple, Google, and Spotify.  Learn more about why diversity matters in biotech at www.rightmixmatters.org.   Learn more about MTS Sickle Cell Foundation at www.mythreesicklers.org.   We’ll be back on Monday with the news.

2020 BIO International Convention Now Fully Digital
Share
Press Release  •  April 3, 2020
The Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) announced today it will be moving the 2020 BIO International Convention scheduled for June 8-11 in San Diego to an online platform, in lieu of an in-person event for this year. The decision was based on the impact of COVID-19, the safety of the attendees and global health recommendations regarding large, in-person gatherings. “The coronavirus is an urgent focus for the biotechnology industry as we work tirelessly to combat this public health threat,” said Jim Greenwood, BIO President & CEO. “Now, more than ever, it’s critical for the biotechnology world to convene and forge collaborations, partnerships and research to advance innovations for our patients and to solve our most timely global issues.”   BIO Digital 2020 will focus on partnerships and virtual collaboration with its BIO One-on-One Partnering system allowing attendees to schedule virtual meetings using their preferred method—whether that is a teleconference system, video meeting service, or another medium—to maximize their business development and licensing potential. The new format will include expert-level educational content focused on the most pressing industry topics including COVID-19, infectious diseases, vaccine development, digital health, business development, and the latest therapeutic advancements in biotech. Panels will run across four days, mixing live and on-demand sessions. BIO remains committed to amplifying the industry’s efforts to develop solutions for patients. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, BIO has created a web page dedicated to resources for the biopharmaceutical industry. The Business Resource Center features the most up-to-date information on how to maintain business continuity during the pandemic. The center’s newest feature is the Coronavirus Hub, a platform that will enable users to post requests for urgently needed resources and announce the availability of supplies and capacity. In 2021, the Convention…

Joint Letter to USTR on Need to Address Mexico's Delays of Ag Biotech Approvals
Share
Agriculture & Environment  •  Letters, Testimony & Comments  •  March 31, 2020
The undersigned organizations greatly appreciate your support for agricultural biotechnology in trade negotiations and other bilateral and multilateral engagements. Biotechnology is delivering valuable tools that help farmers increase productivity, better protect the environment, and support consumer health. To realize the benefits of biotechnology, we need global regulatory systems that are transparent, predictable, efficient and based on science and risk so farmers can use the latest technologies and fully access the global market. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative is critical to the advancement of polices that support both innovation and trade. We are writing to bring to your attention the existing delays in biotechnology approvals in Mexico. Recent changes in the Government of Mexico disrupted the operations of several agencies, including the Federal Commission for the Protection Against Sanitary Risks (COFEPRIS), the agency affiliated with the Secretaria de Salud (Health Secretariat) and responsible for import approvals of genetically modified organisms. COFEPRIS has a statutory timeline of six months to issue an approval, however, the agency has not approved a GMO for import since May 2018. Despite numerous engagements from various levels of the U.S. Government, we still have not seen any indication that approvals will resume.
