    Primary Purpose

    Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) is the world’s largest advocacy association representing member companies, state biotechnology groups, academic and research institutions, and related organizations across the United States and in 30+ countries. BIO members are involved in the research and development of innovative healthcare, agricultural, industrial and environmental biotechnology products. BIO also produces the BIO International Convention, the world’s largest gathering of the biotechnology industry, along with industry-leading investor and partnering meetings held around the world.

     

    The Human Resources Generalist will provide consulting and functional support for human resources operations and initiatives that align with BIO’s mission, vision, and values. The role will help to develop People Office’s policies, programs, and practices that advance BIO’s strategic goals and promote employee engagement and retention. The Human Resources Generalist will manage human resources operations, including but not limited to talent acquisition, compensation and total rewards, employee relations, and payroll and benefits administration, while ensuring BIO’s compliance with employment laws and regulations.

     

    ESSENTIAL Responsibilities

    • Partner with People Team members on developing policies, programs, and practices that enhance BIO’s organizational capability and provide feedback on the value and effectiveness of key initiatives.
    • Maintain and update human resources policies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations and recommend best practices.
    • Support the distribution of the employee handbook and other human resources policies annually.
    • Build trusting and collaborative relationships with employees at organizational levels.
    • Review job descriptions and ensure that all positions have accurate, written job descriptions.
    • Consult with managers and leaders on talent acquisition by assessing talent needs, screening prospective candidates, and making compensation recommendations based on market data.
    • Prepare onboarding and offboarding resources to enhance the employee experience, including new hire orientation and exit survey.
    • Obtain proper documentation for background checks and reference checks.
    • Maintain employee I-9 records and ensure documentation is completed and verified timely.
    • Partner with People Team members on designing and communicating compensation and total reward programs.
    • Administer benefits open enrollment, new enrollment, changes to employee accounts, and other benefits related administration. Check benefits data and billing for accuracy. 
    • Prepare semi-monthly payroll using ADP and manage data inputs effectively, e.g., salary adjustments, tax withholdings, cost center changes, etc.
    • Complete other payroll and benefits duties, such as payroll wires and retirement updates as needed.
    • Support programs and initiatives focused on employee productivity, performance, and engagement.
    • Partner with the People Team on implementing retention strategies focused on key leaders and employees with core competencies or skills critical to the organization.
    • Provide coaching to managers and leaders on employee relations issues.
    • Handle employment related inquiries from applicants, employees, and managers, referring complex or sensitive matters as appropriate.
    • Manage employee personal data changes, e.g., name, address, emergency contact, etc., and professional data changes, e.g., manager, job title, department, etc. efficiently and accurately.
    • Stay current on human resources trends and new technology to improve programs and practices.
    • Perform other responsibilities as requested.

     

    Required Background, EDUCATION, and skills

    • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, or related field.
    • Human Resources Certification (PHR or SHRM-CP) a plus.
    • 5+ years of human resources generalist experience.
    • Knowledge of human resource disciplines, including talent acquisition, compensation and total rewards, employee relations, and payroll and benefits administration.
    • Knowledge of federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
    • Experience with resolving complex employee relations issues ideal.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
    • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
    • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
    • Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.
    • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
    • Ability to take initiative and make independent decisions.
    • Ability to act as a team player and work collaboratively.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.
    • Proficient with or can quickly learn human resources information systems, e.g., ADP.
